Painted boxes (Russian boxes)
Painted boxes Fedoskino, Kholui, Mstiora and Palekh are the most well-known and exquisite lacquer boxes of Russian history. Each painted box, casket or a panel is made of solid and thick paper mass called “papier-mâché”. The boxes are hand-made and are covered with a lacquered miniature. Each item is a result of meticulous craftsmanship that takes up to 3 months. Lacquer boxes have become among the most famous souvenirs and are still enjoying popularity.
