Russian Valenki (Felt boots)
Russian felt boots or valenki have been a symbol of Russia for a long time. They appeared in the north regions of Russia and have been worn by people of all classes for more than 2 centuries. First Russian boots were hand-made and were affordable for only burghers and merchants. Peasants usually had one pair for a family and shared turns in wearing them. As felt for valenki boots is made by rolling and pressing sheep wool, their traditional design was modest, the colours – grey, white, brown and black.
By the influence of the fashion industry, they have become of all colours, with or without a sole, embroidered, painted, decorated with lace, beads, ribbon and so on.
They still enjoy popularity as they are comfortable, warm and eco-friendly.
